Here are the main types of sunless tan products: lotion, sprays, gels, creams, tanning beds (bad, I explain why soon), bronzing powder and sunless tanning pills also.
These are the main ones you can choose from. Out of them all, I highly recommend sunless tanning lotion, for a number of reasons, one being that I have tried many products and this type worked wonders for me, and I am naturally quite fair.
Sunless tanning lotion is excellent because you can apply it very easily by gently rubbing it into the skin and within a fe hours the results show.
Other types of sunless tanning products such as tanning pills require you to swallow a pill and the scary thing with these is that you don’t have control over how brown you will turn out…ever seen those horror pictures of people looking the color of a pumpkin! Exactly, you don’t want to go there.
Sunless tanning lotion also is very easy to apply evenly as you rub it in like suncream, and therefore you don’t get horrible streaks like some of the spray on sunless products can cause.
Some people use sunless tanning bronzing powder, and there are some good ones out there actually, however the drawback with these is that they don’t actually tan the skin as such, and are instead similar to makeup, in that they can and do rub off easily.
Whereas sunless tanning lotions actually contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as their main active ingredient. DHA itself is actually colorless, however it is a sugar, which causes a color change to happen when it comes into contact with the dead skin cells, which cover your skin.
The advantage of this type of sunless tanning method is that it can last up to 7 days and fade like a normal tan would, when the dead skin cell fall away.
Finally you can opt for sunbeds if you like, and the results are good, but there is a major downside to this form of tanning, and that is the dangers of exposure to nasty UV rays. I have used sunbeds before and my skin has gone brown, however I have also, being natural fair, been badly burnt in one before too.
With more and more strong evidence coming out that UV exposure can cause skin cancer, I personally won’t go near sunbeds.
To summarize the best sunless tanning products are lotions, for the many reasons I mentioned above, as the closely match the process of a natural tan. One thing to keep in mind is that sunless tanning lotions that are made from natural ingredients, and are chemical free are the best ones to go for.
