In this post I have provided a concise guide on why I think self tanning lotion is the best choice when it come to sunless tans, and also what to look for in a products and some other helpful sunless tanning lotion tips.

The first thing you should know is how self tan lotions work. They almost all work in the same way, by having dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active tanning ingredient. DHA interacts with the external skin cells, and this is what actually causes the color change in your skin.

This mode of self tanning is very effective, because other self tanners like Bronzers can easily rub off, much like makeup does, and this can lead to streaky and patchy looking tans, that are not attractive, believe me I’ve been there!

Before you go ahead and try self tanning lotion, you need to be aware of one very important tip, which is to be sure to apply the tanning lotion evenly and be careful not to apply too much in areas of the body where the skin is thicker.

The kind of areas I am referring to arm knees, ankles, elbows and knuckles, because remember the DHT interact with surface skin cell, and in these areas there is more skin cell and hence they can absorb DHT easily and in some cases make these area go a darker shade than others.

Another very important sunless tanning tip is make sure you apply some form of UV protection if you are actually going out in the sun. The reason being that no self tanning lotions out of the many of have tried and researched contain any UV protection!

The main ingredient in most tanning lotions is called dihydroxyacetone (DHA) which is the coloring agent that is responsible for causing the desired color change. The great thing about sunless self tanning lotion, is this unique method of tanning, because the DHA can take a few hours to cause the desired color, which is great, because it happens gradually, which means you can test it out slowly and get the perfect color for your skin.

Other self tanning options such as sprays, bronzers and tanning pills, can cause sometimes cause the skin to go a funny orange color because getting the perfect amount is harder to get right, and that is one reason I stick to sunless tan lotions. However one very important thing that I must warn you of, is that I don’t think there is any self tanning lotion on the market that has UV protection. So make sure you are sun smart if you are out in the sun!!

One thing that I do look for in the best sunless tanning lotions, is ones that are made from natural ingredients, as the skin absorbs anything rubbed into very easily, and can pass things into the blood stream.

Although I have not heard of any nasty side effects from tanning lotions in this regard, I just think the body is a natural organism and putting toxins into it can spell trouble, so I stick with natural choices.

Here are the main types of sunless tan products: lotion, sprays, gels, creams, tanning beds (bad, I explain why soon), bronzing powder and sunless tanning pills also.

These are the main ones you can choose from. Out of them all, I highly recommend sunless tanning lotion, for a number of reasons, one being that I have tried many products and this type worked wonders for me, and I am naturally quite fair.

Sunless tanning lotion is excellent because you can apply it very easily by gently rubbing it into the skin and within a fe hours the results show.

Other types of sunless tanning products such as tanning pills require you to swallow a pill and the scary thing with these is that you don’t have control over how brown you will turn out…ever seen those horror pictures of people looking the color of a pumpkin! Exactly, you don’t want to go there.

Sunless tanning lotion also is very easy to apply evenly as you rub it in like suncream, and therefore you don’t get horrible streaks like some of the spray on sunless products can cause.

Some people use sunless tanning bronzing powder, and there are some good ones out there actually, however the drawback with these is that they don’t actually tan the skin as such, and are instead similar to makeup, in that they can and do rub off easily.

Whereas sunless tanning lotions actually contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as their main active ingredient. DHA itself is actually colorless, however it is a sugar, which causes a color change to happen when it comes into contact with the dead skin cells, which cover your skin.

The advantage of this type of sunless tanning method is that it can last up to 7 days and fade like a normal tan would, when the dead skin cell fall away.

Finally you can opt for sunbeds if you like, and the results are good, but there is a major downside to this form of tanning, and that is the dangers of exposure to nasty UV rays. I have used sunbeds before and my skin has gone brown, however I have also, being natural fair, been badly burnt in one before too.

With more and more strong evidence coming out that UV exposure can cause skin cancer, I personally won’t go near sunbeds.

To summarize the best sunless tanning products are lotions, for the many reasons I mentioned above, as the closely match the process of a natural tan. One thing to keep in mind is that sunless tanning lotions that are made from natural ingredients, and are chemical free are the best ones to go for.
